ENGLAND: Premier League - Round 1Chelsea battled to a draw against Swansea at Stamford Bridge, despite playing much of the second half with 10 men following Thibaut Courtois' harsh dismissal.

In a game that had it all and in which Chelsea showed impressive character, the momentum swung this way and that with Chelsea in front at the time of Courtois' sending off- the goalkeeper deemed guilty of bringing down Swansea forward Bafetimbi Gomis inside the area and denying a goalscoring opportunity by referee Michael Oliver, although the Swansea striker's run was taking him away from goal, while Gary Cahill was covering.

Late in the game we suffered a second blow when Diego Costa was fouled by Ashley Williams in a threatening position, with the challenge going unpunished.

The Blues had gone in front through Oscar's bending free-kick from out wide midway through the first half. Swansea levelled through debutant Andre Ayew before Willian's deflected cross immediately put us back in charge at half-time.

The red card, awarded after 52 minutes, was crucial. Not only did it allow Gomis to level the scores but it also meant Jose Mourinho had to remove the excellent Oscar from proceedings to make way for substitute goalkeeper Asmir Begovic - who was outstanding on his first Chelsea appearance.

The home side then had to soak up periods of Swansea pressure, with Begovic making a couple of critical saves, while Eden Hazard and Branislav Ivanovic each had opportunities to put us back in front.

It could have been so different had we kept our full complement of players, who must be credited for the character shown in adversity.

ARSENAL PLAN BENZEMA RAID

Fresh from their community shield win over Chelsea yesterday, Arsenal are strill being linked with a move for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema. According to Spanish publication AS, Arsene Wenger has set aside £45.6m to prise the France international away from the Bernabeu. The report suggests Benzema is a priority for the north London club, who are looking to add a centre back and a striker before the close of the transfer window. However, after yesterday's win at Wembley Wenger was questioned on the Benzema rumours and he replied: "No, honestly, no. I don’t know who brings that up."

New offside rule: Dermot Gallagher backs change for new season

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher thinks the altered offside rule will be easier to understand in practice.

In recent seasons, players have been allowed to occupy offside positions without necessarily being penalised depending on whether they were thought to be actively involved in play or not.

Now they will be punished if they clearly attempt to play a ball close to them when their actions have an impact on an opponent’s ability to play the ball.

Christian Benteke will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of some of Liverpool’s finest strikers after being handed the No 9 shirt at Anfield.

The £32.5m summer signing from Aston Villa, who scored on his debut against Swindon at the weekend, will take over the shirt from Rickie Lambert following his departure to West Brom.

As the Belgian prepares to lead the line for the Reds, we have taken a look at a few of the recent strikers at the club to wear the No 9, starting with the good and finishing with those who did not find the net quite so regularly
